Looking For Diplomatic Manners

While interviewing a New York State Assemblyman this morning our conversation turned to the track record of Governor Eliot Spitzer. The Governor has been in the news a lot over the past few weeks as a result of some of his decisions. While we did talk about those issues, it was something else the Assemblyman said that caught my attention. While discussing how the smoke-screen topics are taking away from the real issues needing attention in New York State, the Assemblyman said what we really need is a return to diplomatic manners.

What an incredible phrase, and what an accurate observation of what’s going on in the world of politics. Not only do we need a return to diplomatic manners in New York State, but the same line of thinking goes for the Federal level of government too. It seems the only things many politicians are concerned about these days are their opinion polls, and whether or not the rest of the party will like them. It seems more and more politicians are less concerned about those who elect them, or even what’s best for the country, and are more concerned with making sure they’re safely tucked away in whatever position they may hold in government.

We need a return to diplomatic manners. A time when the political lines aren’t as boldly drawn, and there’s a concern about being civil, getting along, and doing what’s best for the people, instead of just making sure come election time, the votes will be in.

Just my two cents,
