"Dr. Rus doesn't put himself into a box. Yes, he's an ordained minister. Evangelical at that. But he's not closed minded (as are some in the religious community). This open mindedness makes him an excellent newsman. I've found Dr. Rus to be an asset when I was at CNN Radio and I find him an asset now as I bring him in to talk to my worldwide audience on Paltalk.com."

08-26-08 Water Cooler News

As usual, there’s lots going on in the wonderful world of news today.

On a very local level, I was greeted by a police road block on the way to the radio station this morning. New York State Police, along with Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputies, spent most of the night investigating an accident just up the street from the station. Of course the Democratic convention is underway in Colorado. Last night was ladies night, but it was also a big night for Senator Ted Kennedy. It doesn’t matter if you like him, or don’t like him, I think Senator Kennedy needs a big round of applause for appearing on stage in the midst of his health issues. He looked good and he certainly sounds like he’s not going anywhere as he declared he plans to be involved in the government of the future.

But, aside from all of those stories, there’s also ample information for those gathering at the water cooler through the day. With that in mind, and if you’re looking for a few stories to share around the water cooler today, I’d like to help out with what I call the Water Cooler News. Stories for today include;

  • Old People Insulted By Road Sign
  • Resident Gets A Bang Out Of Homemade Biodiesel Fuel
  • Trailer Park Drug Raid Yields Two Dumb Dudes

Old People Insulted By Road Sign
A group representing the elderly in England are upset over a new road sign depicting senior citizens in a less-than-healthy state. A representative of a group called Age Concern and Help the Aged says the road sign with silhouettes of two hunched-over figures, one with a cane, is insulting. Barry Earnshaw says the road sign may be designed to warn motorists about elderly pedestrians in the area, but it doesn’t represent older people as they are today.

Resident Gets A Bang Out Of Homemade Biodiesel Fuel
There are lots of things that should never be homemade, and now biodiesel fuel falls into that category. Authorities say an Arizona man decided to whip up a batch of homemade biodiesel in his suburban Phoenix garage. But, things didn’t exactly go the way he planned. Police say when fumes from the chemicals reacted with some cleaning fluid, the resulting explosion blew the doors off his garage.

Trailer Park Drug Raid Yields Two Dumb Dudes
It’s like the old egg commercial used to say — This is your brain…this is your brain on drugs. — Police in Salina, Kansas thought their drug raid on a mobile home was a bust when they discovered the place was empty. But, all was not lost when people in a nearby trailer thought they were the ones being raided. Authorities say as they were standing around the empty trailer home wondering what to do next, when they ended up with a bonus bust. Police say two teens started tossing drugs and other drug paraphernalia out the window.

Just my two cents,

    Ok, just how does one depict elderly on a road sign, then? Should they just have a sign that says “Warning: Elderly at play” the way they have one that says “Deaf Child Area?”
