Is Change On The Way?
History In The Making
It’s Inauguration Day in the United States. This is a pretty big day. But, is it getting blown out of proportion? Yes, I’ll admit this is a big day, and an important one as the United States prepares to swear in its first black President. Martin Luther King Jr had a dream. Today part of the dream is fulfilled as President-elect Barack Obama becomes President Obama. Schools are closing, people are traveling to DC and early estimates put the crowd at some 2 million or more! That’s a lot of people cramed into the Capital area.
Aside from a lot of people gathering in Washington to be part of the inauguration, there’s also a lot of money being spent on the big party. Last count has the inauguation price tag at $170 million! That’s a lot of money being spent on a party. The rest of the nation is trying to make ends meet while the President-elect doesn’t even blink an eye at spending millions of dollars on his inauguration event. He claimed he was heading to Washington to put real change in place. Apparently part of the change is to spend money wildly with a total disregard for what the nation is going through.
He screams recession, but spends money hand over fist.
A Platform of Hope & Change
Throughout his campaign President-elect Obama declared hope and change – change and hope. What do those words really mean? Time will tell. But, were the words simply a new twist on the usual empty rhetoric coming in the form of campaign promises? The nation is looking for hope and change, but will it be delivered by a man who has only 2 years of Senate experience? Will hope and change come at the hands of a man who has less political experience than even Caroline Kennedy? New York State is up in arms over the prospect of Kennedy replacing current Senator Hillary Clinton. But at least Kennedy comes from a political family. What do we really know about President-elect Barack Obama.
Yes, this is a big day in the history of the United States of America. People are gushing all over the place about the prospect of the first black President of the United States. But, when the gushing is done, will anything really change? When the gushing is done, will we discover nothing more than empty rhetoric? When the gushing is done, will the media continue winking at past mistakes? Or, will the media discover it’s been duped by a smooth talker.
Time will tell. As for me, I’m sitting and watching how the next few weeks spin out. Personally I’m getting very tired at the left-love-fest and the right-rampage. Lets stop the sniping on the right, and stop the American Idol mindset of the left. President-elect Barack Obama is getting ready to step into the Oval Office. He becomes the leader and protector of the nation. Lets see what happens when the pressure of the office lands squarely on his shoulders. Maybe then we’ll discover what he’s really made of. Many are already talking about the next four years, or even the next eight years. But lets get through the first 100 days. Then maybe we’ll see if change and hope is really on the way.
Just my two cents,
