Cane-Fu Fighting
In Search of Some Cane Masters

Cane-fu is sweeping the nation!
Possibly coming to a community center near you soon! It’s called “Cane-fu” fighting. It’s the art of self-defense involving, yes you guessed it, a wooden cane. I am not making this up!
It’s true! It sounds very odd and strange, but Cane-fu fighting classes are springing up all over the place. The self-defense tactic uses canes, which are usually used by seniors or disabled. But, when you think about it, I guess it was just a matter of time before someone decided to make a buck off such a tactic.
Mark Shuey founded Cane Masters, which manufacturers hardwood canes. He said the canes have an extra hook on them to snare a potential assailant.
Cane Master Classes
Cane Masters helped influence the classes offered at martial arts studios, senior centers and retirement communities. Mark Shuey teaches the classes, along with martial arts expert Gary Hernandez. Both men say that students do not have to be particularly strong or powerful to ward off an assailant. All they need to know is the art of Cane-fu.
Besides stretching exercises to stay in shape, Shuey and Hernandez instruct seniors on a variety of defensive techniques with the cane. The techniques include grabbing an attacker by the foot or neck, or using the stick as a bat or a poker. While becoming an expert in cane fighting can’t be learned overnight, Shuey and Hernandez believe they can show people enough crucial moves to get out of a dangerous situation. As a matter of fact, they’re so sure of the effectiveness of Cane-Fu Fighting that they believe they can teach people who to stay safe even if they’re threatened by a gun or a knife.
All together now…
“Everyone was cane-fu fighting!”
Just my two cents,
Dr. Rus
